Master of Economics - 2018

Current Job Position: Research Assistant, RSE, RSFAS, ANU

  1. Why did you choose to study Economics?

My long term plan is to do research on macroeconomics issues. Thus, I needed to acquire the technical skills that would allow me to address important and interesting questions. Having studied at ANU previously, I had first-hand knowledge of the high standards and reputation of the Master of Economics program. So, it was a really easy decision for me.

  1. How have your studies influenced your professional life and the work you are doing now?

Studying economics has been one of the best decisions I’ve made in my life. Other than the high technical skills the program at RSE provides, studying economics has also changed the way I approach different problems and situations. At the personal level for instance, economics teaches you to identify and focus on the incentives underpinning the behaviour of others. It also teaches you to think strategically and anticipate the actions others will make. At the macro level, economics provides the tools to understand how markets operate and to even design policies that can improve their efficiency. Having completed the Master of Economics program, I feel much more prepared to tackle research on economic issues.

  1. Is there any advice that you would give to current students struggling to see the light at the end of the tunnel?

Yes, always keep in mind why you are here. Most of the time it is hard to see the big picture when we are undergoing coursework. Our immediate goals are (and rightly so) to submit assignments and to pass exams so we tend to lose sight of why we are going through all that hardship in the first place. So in those moments when we struggle the most (which are plenty) it helps to keep in mind what brought us to the program and to remind ourselves of the personal goals we are hoping to achieve with the training we are getting.

  1. Is there anything else you would like to add?

Yes, one last suggestion for other students. Celebrate every end of the semester as a new milestone in your life. It helps for motivation. Besides, you deserve it.
